SLIDE 4 - Sinking of HMS Royal Oak
Just after midnight Prien successfully entered Scapa Flow but found that the Home Fleet had gone to sea. The Fleet had sailed two days earlier in pursuit of the battleship Gneisenau in the Norwegian Sea. Nevertheless U-47 found a target and sunk HMS Royal Oak with the loss of 833 men. The news was received with delight in Germany on the 14th October and the propaganda value was exploited to its maximum.
