Thus this bomber force of experienced crews had been beaten off by determined young men both aircrew and groundcrew who had been in their civilian professions and occupation less than two months previously.
Twelve days later the Squadrons combined again with Archie McKellar of 602 assisted by Red section of 603 bringing down the first enemy aircraft to fall on mainland Britain.
Such was their skill and determination that the area was feared by the Luftwaffe who regarded it as 'Suicide Corner' Lord Trenchard's vision in 1924 had been vindicated by the 'Scottish Auxiliaries'
