SLIDE 7 - First Shots
Around 1000 hours Blue Section of 602 Squadron took off to patrol the Isle of May. The section comprised George Pinkerton, Archie McKellar and Paul Webb. While on station they were vectored to investigate a plot. Pinkerton caught a glimpse of possibly a Heinkel through cloud and opened fire. The intruder escaped. These were the first rounds fired by a Spitfire over British territory. Blue Section returned to Drem to rearm and refuel.
Green Section of Douglas Farquhar, Sandy Johnstone and Ian Ferguson replaced them at their patrol station. Meanwhile KG30 were taking off from Westerland on the Island of Sylt with the prime objective of dive bombing HMS Hood.
