SLIDE 9 - KG-30 Attacks

Green Section immediately got airborne with Johnstone following behind due to ' mag drop itis '. At 13.20. Blue Section were ordered off to patrol Dalkeith at Angels 20.

Helmut Pohle and the first wave of 3 bombers were at the Bridge. He noted that HMS Hood was in drydock and was therefore a forbidden target. In fact it was HMS Repulse as the Hood was in Loch Ewe. Two targets were available, HMS Edinburgh and HMS Southampton lying just East of the Bridge. Pohle elected to attack Southampton. His bomb passed through two decks before exiting through the side of the ship where it sunk the Admiral's Barge and a pinnace. As Pohle pulled out his upper hood was blown off. He then stood off to the North to control the raid.
