At Turnhouse 603 Squadron pilots realised something was going on but there had been no release as yet. Yellow section were ordered up immediately while Red Section protested vehemently. They were also released. Within six minutes there were six sections of Spitfires bearing down on the attacking bombers. German Intelligence had got it wrong again.

Pohle found a Spitfire on either side of him. He attempted his escape along the North Bank of the Forth with George Pinkerton and Archie McKellar attacking in turn.Two of his crew were killed and one engine failed. The next attack by Pinkerton knocked out the other engine and Pohle ditched the aircraft off Crail. His remaining crewman died from his injuries. Pohle survived.
